RAIN CLEARS UP FOR A COLOURFUL CARNIVAL

15:00 - 16 September 2004

Sunshine and showers were the order of the day for Blandford Carnival parade on Saturday. A week of events, including bingo and a duck dash, culminated on Saturday evening as residents and visitors lined the streets to watch a colourful selection of floats.

Carnival chairman Lil Jones said on Tuesday: "It went very well. The rain came just at the wrong moment but it soon cleared and I was very pleased with the children's efforts during the afternoon which were very good.

"We could do more with a bit more local support, as unfortunately most of the floats came from outside of the town.

"I had a letter this morning from a group who entered for the first time this year and want to enter a float next year.

"There are so many organisations in Blandford and we are keen to get them more involved.

"Next year is the Charter year so, come on everybody, let's get them entries in."

Town mayor and carnival chairman Gerry Chapman said: "It was a very enjoyable and there was a nice atmosphere and there were lots of nice floats and walking tableaux.

"There is a lot of work involved and it is a credit to everyone who made an effort."

The afternoon procession shield for endeavour went to Mole Carnival Club for Spooky Express.

In the evening parade, the overall winner was Magnum Carnival Club with Storytime, and the best local entry was Little Acorns playgroup with Bob The Builder. The award for endeavour went to Hinton Hotsteppers with Hinton Harvesters, while the top band was the Talbot Corps of Drums.
