Cultivator.
Chairman's Report.
Ok then time to step back
and take a breath after a very busy few months for the young farmers.
Way back in march we had the Southwest Area event on our doorstep at
Weymouth. Several members from the club attended and the weekend was
highly successful for Dorset. The ten pin bowling team (with one
substitute from Stur) won another competition, this time beating all
the other counties had to offer. More Blandford members participated in
the Sunday sport competitions, with success for Dorset in the 5 aside
football and good showings in the other events. This all added up to
make Dorset joint winners of the Sports cup with Somerset. There was
unfortunately one casualty whilst fighting for Dorset's cause, Jude
managed to hurt her ankle during netball and had a quick trip to
Dorchester hospital in an ambulance. Thankfully all is well now and
Jude is fighting fit ready for more sports action.
Our first talk was about
sexual health, which proved to be an eye opening experience for a few
members. This was followed by a talk from the Police about rural crime
and the rights that you that you possess as a victim of crime. Again it
was highly informative yet slightly worrying and if the letter of the
law was adhered to then there wouldn't be many tractors on the road in
this country. The Easter Egg Hunt at Bloxworth was a great success with
everyone finding enough chocolate and the girls taking a clean sweep of
the large prizes. Not all of the eggs were found though, as i happily
discovered the following day in the barn!
The following week we
were visited by another former chairman, Terry Jones. He gave a very
professional presentation on his work in the food chain unit for the
NFU before finishing with a quiz.
The Tug of War
competition this year was a much smaller gathering than usual. With
both ourselves and Wareham struggling to make up valid teams we decided
to combine our forces. The joint team containing Chris, Andy and Stuart
fought well but were beaten into second place by Marshwood, the only
other team in the competition.
On the 25th April we held
our annual clay shoot at Bussey Stool Farm, by kind permission of Mr J
Farquharson. It was a fantastic day with a high number of entries. Our
thanks go to Hugh, J and Jude who organised and set the event up, as
well as all of the advisory and members who helped with the scoring on
the day.
With the rally fast
approaching several evening were dedicated to the completion of various
handicraft and artistic classes. This clearly paid off on the day when
we came a creditable third overall. With our limited membership this is
a great result so well done to all those members that competed on the
day and supported others. The beginning of May saw the usual Bank
Holiday entertainment with the Georgian Fayre. Manning the pinch points
during the day is certainly not the most glamorous task, but it is very
worthwhile for the club so a big thank you to those members that turned
up and helped.
The light evenings now
make it possible to do many more outdoor activities so be prepared to
get busy, and if possible we will get the advisory together and give
them a good thrashing at rounders!

Club Leaders Report
With Viv away on "business" in the states
again, you have the dubious pleasure of the assistant club leaders
report.
As Tim has no doubt highlighted in his report things seem to be going
well for Blandford YFC. Since the last edition of the Cultivator,
Blandford represented Dorset County at SWA 2004 for the 10-pin bowling
and naturally with the Tim, Tessa & Emma M the success was granted
(-well with a little help from a Stur member and a few less pints than
most teams). Things went well on the Sunday for all involved in the
other sports events, though Jude felt the full force of her opponent on
her ankle, leading to a visit to casualty.
The Georgian Fayre was somewhat light on the attendance from the senior
club members since YFC national weekend occurred on the same bank
holiday. Dennis and Shelia provided valuable help and support all day,
whilst Jude Tessa Tim Ashlee encouraged new members, Stuart &
Becky, with the delights of the Georgian Blandford. Well done to all
involved, its good to have a face in the community on such occasions.
Several more members have also joined and the rally provided the
opportunity for them to get to know what Young Farmers is really about.
Whether the pre-rally disco, the bath race or the cake baking - the
rally has it all, and Blandford did very well with a highly respectable
third overall & winning the afternoon events jointly with Stur.
Having 'entered everything', Hugh proved his worth with a well deserved
position in the senior boys...!!......
Meetings have been varied with everything from knock out darts to a
brewery trip to Ringwood, sexual health to rural crime prevention. The
variety has kept interest and attendance up, lets hop this keeps on
going. Meetings to look forward to include Quad Biking & raft
racing.
Work can get a little hectic over the summer with club meetings
suffering because of this - make the effort to get to the
meetings, its worth while for you and everyone else to have as many
people as possible there.
Fund raising continues to be a little bit of a prickly subject, though
there are plans a foot for a little bit of a walk - again get involved
- all of you. Make sure you have the weekend free as you will be
walking even if it is hard it'll be better and more fun, the more of
you there are. Try and find some individual sponsorship well in advance
of the event.
Keep up the good work and keep on enjoying the benefits of YFC.
